MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has suggested to the state government to consider linking ration cards with Aadhar cards to tackle the menace of bogus and duplicate ration cards
"Aren't two years enough to unravel the mystery of bogus ration cards?" asked a division bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice R D Dhanuka. Will it not be a prudent approach in the matter to make it compulsory to produce the Aadhar card for issuing a new ration card? Why is the government not considering this? Unless you put a verification process in place, you cannot track duplicate or bogus ration cards.''
The state's claim that it was short staffed failed to impress the court. "Link everything to the Aadhar card scheme and make one team to run it. No great change is necessary. The state will have to only link both the cards via a software," said the judges.
The court was hearing a PIL about bogus ration cards in a village, but its scope was widened to include the whole state. Following a December 2010 order, the government carried out a state-wide exercise. The stat detected and cancelled 53.39 lakh ineligible cards during the special campaign. The court had sought action against government officers who issued the cards.
